    Hello,

I keep being asked to update my sucuri plugin on http://www.childrens.org.au and it continues to fail, each time I try. Please see the update log with error message below.

    —————————————————————————

The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…

Updating Plugin Sucuri Security – Auditing, Malware Scanner and Hardening (1/1)
    Downloading update from https://downloads.wp.xz.cn/plugin/sucuri-scanner.1.7.9.zip…
    Unpacking the update…
    Installing the latest version…
Removing the old version of the plugin…
    Plugin update failed.
An error occurred while updating Sucuri Security – Auditing, Malware Scanner and Hardening: Could not remove the old plugin.
    Disabling Maintenance mode…

    All updates have been completed.
    ————————————————————————

When I refresh the page, it still indicates that I need to update. If I go to the installed plugins view and select ‘update now’ it returns ‘update successful’ but when I refresh, it again indicates that I need to update.

Any idea how I might resolve this?

    cheers
    tory

One of the lines in that error messages says that “[…] Could not remove the old plugin” and that is what must be addressed in order to resolve the problem that you are facing.

This error always happens when a directory or file is uploaded to the server using a different account than the one that is being used at the moment, there are many cases where this may happen so I will not get much in details, instead I will go directly to the solution…

Go to the hosting panel that you use to manage your website (not the WordPress admin panel but the hosting panel) and use the “File Manager” to navigate through the folders of your project, go to the plugins folder (generally under /wp-content/plugins/), and force the deletion of the directory named “sucuri-scanner”, or change the permissions to allow WordPress to do this for you.

If you do not know any of these steps then I suggest you to contact the support team of your hosting company and ask them to delete this directory for you. Once the directory is deleted you can install the new version of the Sucuri plugin as you were doing so far.
