• I have just tried polylang and found it very useful. However, there is one serious problem I encountered: in the editor the little window to the right which contains the category selection is empty. I checked in the source code, and it seems that function start_el in the class Walker_Category_Checklist is never called after the plugin has been activated (file /wp-admin/includes/template.php).

Furthermore, I can’t set translations for categories on the page
    /wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

Maybe there is some connection between the two problems.

I have found a pattern: it only happens with the non-standard language.

The feature which is supposed to allow me to add translations for the category names does not work.

So, I suppose, there are now categories shown because there is no translation to the respective language. So, the key is probably to fix the translation feature for categories. I have checked it with 0.7.2 today. It didn’t work.
