Plugin removes menu items with no submenu page

Greetings, a user of a plugin I have noticed that when your plugin is active, it will remove plugin icons in the WP admin menu bar that do not have submenu pages. Instead of the plugin icon, there is just an empty area.

After taking a look at your plugin, I noticed the problem arises from line 150 and 151 on disable-updates.php. By removing the update_plugins option/capability, it will prevent any plugin showing that does not have a submenu page. This could be an issue with the WP core, but I thought you would like to be informed anyway.

The plugin is Pre Party Browser Hints.

I have been able to get this resolved by changing the capability from “update_plugins” to “activate_plugins”.

Thanks @samperrow, unfortunately I can’t reproduce the issue in my WP 5.8 test installations.

With both plugins enabled I still get to see the menu icons: https://screens.schloebe.de/image_2021-09-03_001.jpg

I have tried it on two non-multisite installs and I get the same result. Maybe if you test it on a non-multisite environment you can reproduce it?

Looks like a plugin issue particularly related to “Pre Party Browser Hints” I assume.

I installed the Jetpack plugin (which doesn’t have submenu pages either) and while the “Pre Party Browser Hints” menu item disappeared, the Jetpack menu item was still visible while my “Disable All WordPress Updates” plugin was enabled: https://screens.schloebe.de/image_2021-09-03_002.jpg

I noticed this issue does not happen for plugin pages with multiple submenu pages, like Jetpack. When I added some for my plugin, the issue was fixed.

Well, I havn’t finished setting up Jetpack on my test environment so it didn’t have submenu pages either.

Strange, I did a fresh install from scratch of Jetpack, without any special config, and it came with two submenu pages (the ones visible as you hover over the “Jetpack” item in the menu).

Anyways, now trying to find other plugins that add top-level menu items without submenu pages to check if it is an issue with other plugins aswell.
