Turns out I need to first update another plugin named Starter Template. Weird but I resolved my problem
Solution:
This issue is being caused by a bug in the Starter Templates plugin that has now been fixed.
If your site is stuck in maintenance mode, you can fix that by deleting the “.maintenance” file in your main WordPress directory (probably /public_html)
To update to the fixed version of the plugin:
- Deactivate the Starter Templates plugin (since it’s breaking the updater)
- Update the Starter Templates plugin to 3.1.26 or higher
- Reactivate the Starter Templates plugin
Mine is SiteGround (Can’t find quote or reply option so I’ll just reply like this)

Thanks @pikamander2
Your solution worked for me too 🙂
Thank you very much @pikamander2
I have this same error. I only have 1 theme installed, and when I try to update it…I get the same error with the -1. It then goes to maintenance mode but nothing gets updated. I can’t update or add any additional plugins.
Any help?
I also managed to resolve the updating issues by deactivating Starter Templates. Thank U
