[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Setting Permissions

It seems that its expected behavior to go back and forth with permissions regarding this plugin. Is this true?

Several “tutorials” reference changing folders from 775/755 to 777 and back and forth. For example the plugin constantly wants permissions changed on the wp-content folder.
