[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Upgrading

    Does anyone have a suggestion on the preferred upgraded method? I tried the upgrade option to do it through wp-admin, but it failed to de-activate plugin, and didn’t work. I hate updating the files live on my server, but if that’s the best way, I guess I can do that.

    – Do I need to de-activate the plugin before upgrading it?
    – Do I need to back up my config files (running wpmu) before upgrading?
    – Should I remove the config files from the server after backing up?
    – Should I ‘uninstall’ the plugin and then re-install it?
    – Has anything changed in the advanced-cache.php file?

    Final question, unrelated to the upgrade. I noticed in the plugin directory, you have a memcached.ini file, with some extra settings, as well as a modifiled php.ini file. Are these setting that you are recommending making, or that have to be made in order to use W3 total cache effectively?

    Thanks for the help Frederick! The plugin rocks, and hoping it’s going to help us hit some pretty substantial traffic numbers on our hardware.

    If you use WP’s upgrade it will deactivate it for you during the process, so yes.

    Do I need to back up my config files (running wpmu) before upgrading?

    The config file format has changed a bit, so you can change it for the purposes of manually restoring your settings.

    If you want.

    See above.

    Not that I can recall at the moment.

    These are just supposed to help you customize your software if you don’t know where to begin. They are not required and things will work without the customizations.

    Thanks for the help ! I tried the automatic upgrade option and it didn’t work. Said couldn’t de-activate the plugin, and upgrade failed. Does that mean I need to manually deactivate it ?

    Also, we’re running WPMU, and have separate config files for each site. If the config files have changed, and I leave the old ones there, will upgrading the plugins replace those config files, or do I need to delete the old ones completely, go through the settings panel and allow W3 to recreate the config files?

    Yes unfortunately until the final release is done, I may have to change things.

    I would back them up anyway. But try to reuse them if possible.
