Also, you have to be careful with installing this. It creates a db.php file, and if you are using the Multi-DB plugin, the db.php in wp-content which is needed for multi-db to function will get over written.
I installed W3 Total Cache to my WordPress MU installation based on the suggestion above.
When I activate the plugin sitewide, all of my blogs give me an error like the following:
W3 Total Cache Error: Unable to read config file or it is broken. Please create D:\Apache2.2\htdocs/wp-content/w3-total-cache-config-bond.aurorak12.org.php from D:\Apache2.2\htdocs/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/w3-total-cache-config-default.php.
This is for one of the blogs on my WPMU, bond.aurorak12.org
I get similar errors for my other blogs.

No, I am not using the multi-db plugin.
I am using WP MU 2.8.4a with the following plugins:

Did you change the permission of the wp-content folder to 777?
wpmu does not look into subfolders, so placing the whole folder into mu-plugins doesn’t work.
I suggest to put it into the plugins folder and activate sidewide.

@fredericktownes – How can we use both W3TC and Multi-DB? I just installed the plugin, and it over-wrote my /wp-content/db.php file, which is required for Multi-DB to work.
I assume one instance of the db.php file would need to be renamed?
No they are not compatible.
Can you elaborate a little more on why not? Is there any way to have W3TC look for another file besides db.php?
We’ve also got a discussion going over at the WPMU Dev forums.
Only one db.php file can exist at once, so there is an immediate impasse there that requires W3TC to otherwise handle logic used in Multi-DB. Support for this scenario for v1.1. Something better to be honest, support for Google MMM.
Any idea when v1.1 will be available? (rough, ballpark estimate?)
Lots of WPMU/Multi-DB users (myself included) could really use W3TC.
