[Plugin: WordPress MU Domain Mapping] A record change breaks mapping

    I have a network install that was running fine with all 5 mapped domains working as expected. The client asked that the primary domain for 2 of the sites be changed.

    These URLs already existed as secondary URLs in the Domain Mapping plugin. I am not sure what the DNS record was for them prior to the change request.

    The 2 URLs now have A records pointing to the server IP, but each is generating a time out error. If the URL entries are set to “Primary” in the DM plugin, the 2 blogs are unreachable. If they are not set as “Primary” the blogs can be reached via their network subdomains.

    I downloaded and installed the development version of the plugin yesterday. Changes made in the plugin admin panel are changing in the DB.

    Any thoughts?

    That sounds like a server configuration issue. It could be rewrite rules in your htaccess that was redirecting some of your domains.

    Whether the domain maps are set to primary or not is secondary to the fact that you are getting the 500 error when you request the mapped domain.

    If you go to http://rennickmedia.net you get redirected to rennickmedia.com. The .com is the primary domain but both domains work.

    Since I am working in a corporate environment,

    I need to be able to eliminate the plugin as the potential problem before bugging our server & DNS people again. I have deleted the references to all URLs for the problem blogs in the plgin. What should be the proper behavior of a non-mapped URL?

    Also,

    Would simple deactivating of the plugin and reactivating do more harm than good? One of the blogs is a functioning live-to-world site.

    If you have an infinite redirect loop you will get a 500 error (whether on not you have the DM plugin installed). That’s why I suggested you look at the .htaccess.

    Deactivating & reactivating won’t make any difference with your issue.

    What should be the proper behavior of a non-mapped URL?
