Trying to setup a test installation on a couple of domains I’m not currently using (talian-theme.co.uk – IP 146.255.35.9 and stallion-theme.co.uk – IP 146.255.35.63) using multisite with domain mapping.

Have multisite with sub-domains working on talian-theme.co.uk.

Have installed the plugin and think the only step remaining is changing DNS settings correctly.

Running a Godaddy virtual server with three IPs that are shared for my other domains, I use Virtualmain as the control panel and for the .co.uk domains for the test are registered with Fasthosts and they don’t appear to have domain parking (other than showing their ads). If I can’t get this working will try with .com’s that are registered with Godaddy, but do need to work this out for .co.uk domains as well as plan to move most of my WordPress sites (about 90 and a fair number are .co.uk) to a handful of mapped setups (it’s a MASSIVE pain updating ~90 WordPress installs!!!).

Have the main multisite setup on talian-theme.co.uk have working subdomains (so multisite is working)

Two test sub-domains without mapping them to a domain.
    test.talian-theme.co.uk Hello post install
virtual-light.talian-theme.co.uk Imported posts from another site

Primary domain set to: stallion-theme.co.uk associated sub-domain stallionthemecouk.talian-theme.co.uk (hello post install) loaded what you’d expect (stallion-theme.co.uk loaded “Apache 2 Test Page” and stallionthemecouk.talian-theme.co.uk loaded the hello install) before changing DNS settings on the two domains.

Reasonably confident everything up to this point is working as expected.

After associating stallionthemecouk.talian-theme.co.uk and stallion-theme.co.uk they both loaded stallion-theme.co.uk (“Apache 2 Test Page” loads so the redirection is working but mapping isn’t).

This is where I start to run into issues.

As I’ve been trying various DNS settings there might be some caching issues, I keep getting other domains on the server loading (virtual-light.com, almohare.com or redrosewriting.com** – basically the default domains for the three IPs used on the server), when it isn’t getting the wrong cache the “Apache 2 Test Page” loads.

** The current DNS settings below appear to be loading redrosewriting.com which is the default domain for the IP 146.255.35.63

Have wildcard sub-domains set and working on talian-theme.co.uk

Added a CNAME and this is the DNS settings from Virtualmin.

    The above are all defaults.

I’m not sure what to do with the DNS settings for stallion-theme.co.uk

Currently under Fasthosts control panel I’ve got the nameservers set to

    ns1.stallion-theme.co.uk 146.255.35.63
    ns2.stallion-theme.co.uk 146.255.35.63

This is all I have to set to use a new domain normally.

    talian-theme.co.uk has the following nameservers

    ns1.talian-theme.co.uk 146.255.35.9
    ns2.talian-theme.co.uk 146.255.35.9

I can add new A and CNAME entries under Fasthosts control panel, but not sure what to add?

Think that covers my life story 🙂

    Figured it out.

Made the mistake of setting up hosting for the domain to be mapped to the main domain on the same server as the main domain. So even though the domain had a different IP address because it was on the same server it was using the hosting I’d setup to test the domain was setup correctly prior to mapping it! After disabling the hosting it worked quickly.

In hindsight pretty easy to do.

I’ve set a domain up with Godaddy and Fasthosts and it’s basically the same procedure.

Revert to whatever their parked domain feature is, this changes the nameservers to theirs etc… (not sure if this is important). This was a sticking point for me, seams counter intuitive to use their parked domains settings.

Edit their default DNS settings and on Godaddy change the @ DNS A records IP address from their default IP address to the IP address of the main mapped domain. That was all I had to to under Godaddy, though the domains in question are not using email, so I’d guess if I want my server to handle email there’s more to do.

On Fasthosts there wasn’t an @ A record after reverting to their parked domains setting (I clicked a link that said something like Revert to Default DNS settings, this cleared all my changes, set their nameservers and DNS settings), so created a new A record and add @ for the hostname and the IP address of the main mapped domain in the IP form. After it was saved the hostname was blank (@ wasn’t shown, but it works).

In Virtualmin (controlpanel I use) I only had to add a wildcard A record for the original multisite setup

    *.talian-theme.co.uk. IN A 146.255.35.9

Didn’t need to setup other records, this wasn’t needed-

    stallionthemecouk.talian-theme.co.uk. IN CNAME stallion-theme.co.uk.

There’s also a setting in Virtualmin under “Server Configuration >> Website Options : Website matches all sub-domains?” that needs to be ticked yes on the main domain. I’m not sure if this is the same as the wildcard A record or if both are needed. Will test this on the next setup (probably going to run with at least 5 mapped domain setups).

I started again to get the above working with domains registered under Godaddy as there is info about this online, nothing for Fasthosts.

    Main domain http://star-forums.net/ (currently blank)
mapped domain http://parksandtourism.net/ (added a little content)
    mapped domain http://stallion-theme.co.uk/ (currently blank)

When I get the time will write up what I did at http://www.google-adsense-templates.co.uk/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping-plugin-dns-settings.html
