the timthumb version used there is the latest one ( http://timthumb.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/timthumb.php ). its completely safe.

Yes but Featured Image is much more convenient to use for eventual future compatibility and no speaking about custom croppping with Custom Image Edit plugin… There is no reason to use TimThumb in modern WP.
