    Just missing everything that comes after that…

    The plugin has to rename the file so it can do the following:
    Protect the actual file with an indeterminable name (security)
    So multiple files of the same name can be in the same folder (revisions)

    The system determines the filename for the link using the permalink that is usually determined from the document/post title attribute.

    This allows you to have 1 link that will always link to the latest revision, if it went straight to the file, then this would not be possible as it would violate file namespace rules.
