Works fine for me in pre-PHP 5.2 by changing the regex to the following:
$pattern = ‘/<(?P<script>script).*?<\/script\s*>|<(?P<style>style).*?<\/style\s*>|<!(?P<comment>–).*?–>|<(?P<tag>[\/\w.:-]*)(?:”.*?”|\’.*?\’|[^\'”>]+)*>|(?P<text>((<[^!\/\w.:-])?[^<]*)+)|/si’;
