[Plugin: WP Maintenance Mode] Error when using with W3TC

    WP Maintenance Mode (latest version 1.8.1 and 1.8.0 – earlier version compatibility unknown) not working correctly with W3TC.
    NOTE: All caches cleared

    Site is put into maintenance mode, but the theme is not shown – see image – Screenshot of page

    Error messages also shown in W3TC admin
    “It appears Page Cache URL rewriting is not working. If using apache, verify that the server configuration allows .htaccess or if using nginx verify all configuration files are included in the configuration.”

    “It appears Minify URL rewriting is not working. If using apache, verify that the server configuration allows .htaccess or if using nginx verify all configuration files are included in the configuration.”

    There’s nothing in .htaccess to indicate problem when plugin activated

    One more thing – latest version 1.8.1 PREVIEW returns 404 error – 1.8.0 PREVIEW works however

    Works great with other sites using different caching systems!

    If the maintenance mode active, the use the plugin a function form W3TC to flush page cache. Maybe this not usefull with W3TC. Can you check the maintenance page, where is the stylesheet?

    W3TC minify for CSS enabled – stylesheet location DOMAIN/wp-content/w3tc/min/b51517e1.c91729.css?9d7bd4.
    With W3TC caching disabled maintenence mode works fine

    Plugin doesn’t clear the caches, but flushing manually doesn’t work either – The caching script is still in the .htaccess file unless caching is disabled or plugin de-activated – so it looks like this script causes the problem.

    I solved this by using a custom stylesheet and “Own Style” as described. (The stylesheet and images are located on another sub-domain to avoid possible conflicts with W3 .htaccess script)

    Your hint about the stylesheet location was the clue and helped a lot – thanks!

    I think anyone able to set-up W3TC should be able to get things working using the Own Style method – I’ll do a write up and post a link here for anyone else with this issue, when next I have time for personal stuff
