[Plugin: WP-Markdown] Having issues wrapping link around image

I have a client that needs to use markdown (as they can’t manage html) and I suggested they do this for when they wrap links around images:
http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2133/whats-the-recommended-syntax-for-an-image-with-a-link

The problem is when they do that, the next time they edit the markdown auto-formats it into a mess of something along the lines of:
