Plugins and updates could not create directory – fail

    Hi

    I am attempting to update WP and would like to back it up first, but I keep receiving the error below.

    “Downloading update from http://downloads.wp.xz.cn/release/wordpress-4.4-new-bundled.zip…
    Unpacking the update…
    Could not create directory.: /var/www/vhosts/httpdocs/wp-content/upgrade/wordpress-4.tmp
    Installation Failed”

    I can not install any plugins either via the WP install or with a manual download and upload. I receive the same error “Could not create directory”

    My website is hosted through 1&1.co.uk and managed on a VN. I am unable to access the server or the Parallels Panel as I adopted the website from an old employee whose email address is now redundant, so I have no idea what our username & password would be!

    Is the error caused by something simple like the permissions? and if so how would I gain the correct permissions with out access to the server?

    I apologise if I’m being silly but I am New to Word Press and website management.

    As of yet we have found no rhyme or reason for this to happen, but we are looking.

    Please provide as MUCH detail about your server as possible (OS, PHP version and flavor, etc) where the fix is in progress at https://core.trac.ww.wp.xz.cn/ticket/34976

    For now, you can “update” plugins and themes by deleting and installing the latest version.
