it will just go to a screen that says its downloading the plugin and will seems as if its frozen.
Go in and delete the wp-content/upgrade folder. Then try again. Sometimes it gets corrupted.
Have those troubles with plugin update as well. But seems to be more than this because none of the admin script is accessible

– ..
redirects to the main blog page.
..deleted the folder but doesn’t matter..
