While adding plugins to a new installation of WP 3.0 today, a plugin failed to install completely. It did not give an error message but did not go any further than the first line.

Now, when I reloaded wp-admin/plugins.php, the only text on it is “Plugins” and the “Add New” button. In other words, the list of the dozen or so plugins I had previously installed is no longer accessible.

I tried reinstalling 3.0 to fix the problem but that, too, hangs at “Downloading update from http://ww.wp.xz.cn/wordpress-3.0.zip…” so I am stuck. How do I regain access to the plugins and possibly fix whatever the larger problem is here?

Strangely, the plugins menu reappeared. I had clicked on “Plugins” several times, yielding nothing, and then, all of a sudden, it returned, twenty minutes after disappeared.

The plugins page disappeared again. I am assuming that it will return but if someone could shed some light on this situation, I would appreciate it. Also, the site suddenly stopped displaying excerpts.

It could be a plugin conflict, but considering that the issue occurs randomly, it’ll take a while to troubleshoot. Try decativating all plugins for a while (maybe leave Akismet active for anti-spam purposes). If that resolves the issue, slowly reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

I can’t access any of them to deactivate, at least from the menu; the “Editor” page under plug-ins is blank.

You don’t need the Editor page, just the main Plugins section in the admin panel. If you can’t access that, you’ll have to reset them manually.

That page is blank, too. (wp-admin/plugins.php) I’ll check the link you gave. But I just noticed another problem too: the Post Edit page is inaccessible as well (wp-admin/edit.php); this one gives me a browser error that the page is not available on the remote server. It was working fine an hour ago, bfore this problem started.

I renamed the plugins directory to plugins.hold and created a blank folder called “plugins”. All the problems went away so I assume it was a plugin conflict.
