Why doesn’t Postie support POP3-SSL when another plugin “Post by Email” does? I have a gmail account and gmail will only accept SSL for connecting. My website is hosted by GoDaddy. “Post by Email” works fine and is able to pull posts from my email account. Why can’t Postie? “Post by Email” would be a solution for me but it doesn’t handle images which is critical for me. I can’t even find any free Pop3 email that doesn’t require SSL connections. I even tried creating a php.ini file to enable imap but nothing works. If the plugin “Post by Email” can connect without any trouble there must be a way for Postie to do the same.

Currently Postie requires the PHP IMAP module to support POP3-SSL. If the POP3-SSL option isn’t available it is because your PHP install doesn’t have this module configured/installed.

How do you do that? GoDaddy was no help. I tried creating a php5.ini file that I found on the Internet but that didn’t seem to do anything. I still don’t udnerstand why the other plugin “Post by Email” works and not “Postie”? Alternatively where can I get a free Pop3 email account. From what I can tell – all email servers these days seem to use SSL port 995.

It is something GoDaddy will have to set up. You could try a different hosting company.
Removing this dependency is on my list, but it works for almost everyone so I haven’t started yet.

So does this mean that if you use GoDaddy for hosting you are unable to use Postie? Please clarify, thanks.

Many people use GoDaddy hosting with Postie. I suspect all GoDaddy servers are not configured the the same way. The one you are on happens to not have the IMAP library.

You might ask GoDaddy support to move your account to a different server that has it enabled.

So, the GoDaddy Managed WordPress hosting does not support IMAP. If you want the IMP libraries, you have to move to (or sign up for) the shared hosting service. You lose some addons such as automatic backup but do get IMAP.
