I want to decide on my own which posts are to be listed on “popular posts” sidebar

Have you tried looking for a plugin?

All the plugins are measuring popular articles by counting views, etc.
I want to use a custom field, i.e. popular and then decide per post to set this field with value = 1, then to show a section: “Popular Articles” to show only articles with popular = 1
