Populate the widget area patterns tab?

    When looking at all the block options in the customizer, there is a patterns and a media tab. They are empty. I would like to populate them via a plugin. This seems to need something particular or new as the patterns are only available in post and page editors.

    If I understood correctly, I think you have to create patterns when editing a parent block on a page. Select parent block > click the three dots (…) > “Create pattern”. I tried it and the pattern appears under “Block” of the right side panel.
