Thx for responding so quickly.
Turned all plugins off – twice. First time new post stayed in text mode – no visual mode available. Next round it didn’t show anything but add media. Changed theme to 2015 with same result. Using goodnews theme on 1 site and Valenti 3.2 on the other. The site that is working ok uses Suffusion.
We have put months of work into the the site with the goodnews theme and do not want to change. Love the ideas behind 4.4 but is there a way to go back to the previous version temporarily? I have a backup but would lose all of today’s work.

Followup:
Went back 1 day on the entire server – everything worked and then updated with the same bad result. Going to have to stick with 3.41 as this update problem effectively breaks what we are doing.
Update:
Same issue with the latest edition of visual composer. It is stuck on text mode and visual does not function.
