I have helped a friend export the content of her old blog and then import the content to her new blog.

After the import when she click on the link “Older posts” in her new blog, it is not going to the correct place.

I got a solution: Change the permalink to default and hit save, once done, change the permalink to post-name and see if that helps.

I did that and on my computer everything looks correct but on my friend’s computer and another friend of hers’ computer it still point to the wrong place.

Try asking your friend to clear her browser cache. Usually if it’s right for you, but not someone else, that’s the problem. 🙂

    Hi James,

I asked her to clear history on her computer but I think that she didn’t clear the right things.

I will send her a snapshot what I clear when I clear history.

Excellent, please let us know how it goes!

I asked her to clear browser history but she when she clicks on “Older Posts” she gets to her web site instead of her blog.

One week ago when I tried the first solution, it was just fine on my computer but now I run into the same issue.

When I log in and try the old solution again and choose Post name for Permalinks and it looks correct on my commputer again.

I have asked her to check on her computer to see if it is correct or not.

    Hi again,

Now when I have chosen Post name for the permalinks it is finally correct on her computer too. 🙂

    Excellent, I’m glad it’s working now! 🙂

Me too. She was very happy today when she saw that “older posts” pointed to the correct Place.

Let keep our fingers crossed that she does not run into trouble one week from now 🙂

What I would like to know is why postname seems to be the solution. What happens with the permalinks when using postname

    (@macmanx)

Do you mean that only postname works? You can’t get one of the other structures, like “Day and name”, to work?

    (@gabby_wordpress)

Yes when I chose Postname for Permalinks, “Older posts” pointed to the correct place on my friend’s computer. I have not tested the other options.

The interesting thing was that one week ago it was set on default, set it to postname and then back to default and it did not point correctly on my friend’s computer but correct on mine. Yesterday it did not point correctly on my computer either..

That’s why I asked what happened really.

Default makes “Older posts” point to the wrong place

I hope now that it will be stable from now on

I’d suspect a problem with caching, but if it’s working perfectly now, and that’s how you want the permalinks, no reason to mess with it. 🙂

The problem is back again. Today my friend informed me that “older posts” does not point to the correct Place.

I tested it on my computer and ran into the same problem.

I changed the permalinks to Day and name and now everything is fine on my computer.

    This is a bit annoying.

Hm, if it’s still working now, make a copy of your .htaccess file and just rename it to htaccess (remove the dot). As soon as you notice it has stopped working again, compare the current .htaccess with the old copied htaccess to see if there are any notable differences.

    Hi James,

Something weird is going on. Just tested it again and now it was the same problem but changed the permalinks back to post name and it is working.

Tried to find the .htaccess file. Log on through ftp but could not find it. Where is this file? I need to dig into this.

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Make sure that you set your FTP client to display invisible files. It will be in the same directory as wp-login.php.

Once you can view invisible files:

    1. Re-set permalinks as desired and save.

    2. Confirm that they work.

    3. Make a copy of your .htaccess file and just rename it to htaccess (remove the dot).

Once the problem re-occurs, compare the current .htaccess with the old copied htaccess to see if there are any notable differences.

I just did but when I look there, there is no such file. When I do a search I do not get a hit.
