Pre upgrade question

I would like to have the top nav menu display icons like the storefront handheld footer bar linked to certain pages. I see one of the upgrades includes menu item icons. Do these icons do exactly what I am describing in my nav wish list? Can I add these to the nav bar like the storefront handheld footer nav bar?
