Preconnect: Use Plugin or Website Header?

    Hi Raul,

    We have three questions concerning the “Preconnect” feature of your plugin:

    (1) Can you give us guidance on what would be the most common Preconnect entries (URLs) that we can add to your plugin to help speed up our website? For example, is their a website speed test tool (or similar) that will tell us what URLs to use for Preconnect?

    (2) It is better to add Preconnect URLs to your plugin over adding them in the header of our website using, for example: <link rel=”preconnect” href=”https://fonts.gstatic.com&#8221; crossorigin>

    We’re thinking the Preconnect “processing” time would be faster if added to the header instead of your plugin.

    (3) How can we confirm that Preconnect is working when adding URLs to your plugin?

    1)
    Preconnect allows the browser to setup early connections before an HTTP request is actually sent to the server. This includes DNS lookups, TLS negotiations, TCP handshakes. This in turn eliminates roundtrip latency and saves time for users.

    When the browser starts reading the html, it finds these and pre-establish a connection to those domains, before actually reading the html part that references the domain.

    You can use it for instance, for a cdn url, google fonts or any other external domains you plan to connect to on that page, that are high priority.

    It’s the same… the functionality is there for those that don’t edit the theme files or for other resources.

    3)
    Look at the html source on your browser. You should see a <link rel=”preconnect” in the header for each domain you added there.
