For personal website I use TablePress. One feature I do use is the Expand/Collapse Rows (now part of Responsive Layout). To get this one feature under version 3.0 I have to pay more than I pay for entire site hosting.

I make extensive use of this feature so to change would be many days of work.

I appreciate that paying for software/subscribing is a reasonable ask for any developer (I already subscribe to several plug-ins – significantly more functionality than TablePress and at far lower costs).

Could I encourage the developer to consider modifying their pricing such that where minimal above “Free” features are wanted and/or for non-commercial use that there be a lower cost subscription option. As the pricing stands most “hobbyists” like myself would be unable to continue use but also face vast amount of work to undo their use of the v2 plugin.

nb Possible that lower non-commercial” subscription with limited functionality options and eg with forum support only would actually generate more income as it would move the v3 into the reach of many private individuals.

    Hi!

Thanks for your post and your feedback and sorry for the trouble! I totally understand that something like this can be frustrating. Money is always critical, especially for hobbyists or nonprofits.

However, I think it’s also important to take into account how much time, even if it is voluntary, can be saved by using proper tools (which cost money) — time that then can be used for other activities or tasks on the site.

I see what you mean with just having the need for a single feature or so. At this time, it’s not possible to purchase only individual features. This would add a maintenance burden for me that’s just not sustainable (because I would need to maintain many more release packages and things like that), and it would make pricing much more complex (in the end, it’s a mixed calculation where some modules that create a high user value also allow me to maintain and support less popular modules). Thanks for your understanding!

    Best wishes,
    Tobias

P.S.: Remember that there’s also an update offer for users of the retired TablePress Extensions, as well as Black Friday coming up!

Plugin developoer has demonstrated breaking of trust.

Removing free functionality into expensive subscription is rarelky done in software industry for obvious reasons.

Many adopt a plug-in for long term but with this one whoi is to say dev wont decide he want a new car next year and more currently free functionality becomes subscription, maybe at twice the yearly price.

This dev has broken user trust and fails to understand long term use of site software.

    Hi @webdev465,

I’m really sorry that you are disappointed here. Please let me clarify a few things: No features in the free version of TablePress were removed! I did however indeed discontinue and retire separate “TablePress Extension” plugins, which were available as add-ons on the TablePress website. For a long time, I tried making this sustainable by suggesting donations to its users. I invested a lot of time into these but having them as separate plugins was an additional maintenance burden that is now gone after integrating them directly. Also, just because I decided to once give these features away for free, it doesn’t mean that I have to do so indefinitely.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias
