I emailed support and was asked to post this issue in the forum, so here goes:

I’m in the process of setting up the free version of Events Calendar on a new site at http://www.live-in-clarksville.com which will be used by local musicians to list upcoming live performances and venues. I plan on implementing the pro-version to enable the recurring events option and the other community plug-in I noticed to allow others to post events after I get the free version working properly. By the way, is there any way to allow others to post events without the paid add-on?

I’m trying to follow your tutorial perfectly and had no problems with the initial steps. When I got to this part, http://tri.be/finding-your-events-adding-them-to-the-menu/ a problem surfaced. In particular, this part of the tutorial:

On your site’s backend, navigate to Appearance –> Menus.
In the middle column, scroll down until you see an option for “Events.” You’ll notice that underneath it are other event-related metaboxes: Venues, Organizers, and Event Categories. You can add any of the above to your menus by just clicking the checkbox next to them and hitting “Add to Menu.” They’ll as a result appear in the list of menu items in the right-hand column.

On my site the option for ‘events’ is not highlighted and there are no event-related metaboxes to choose from. Would that be an installation error on my part? I’m using the 2011 WP theme and since I just installed it on the site I haven’t added anything besides the events calendar. I’ve attached a screenshot of what my Appearance – Menus page looks like. (couldn’t attach the screenshot to this post so hopefully you’ll know what I’m referring to).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi CheapSkateMom. Thanks for the post here and for explaining your issue. Happy to help you out best I can here.

Regarding your first question: you can implement Community + The Events Calendar without the paid PRO add-on; but as Community Events itself costs $, you’d need to at least purchase that.

On the actual core problem here: if I understand your note correctly, when you go to Appearance -> Menus, it looks like this (http://d.pr/i/JlH3)? Let me know if I’m wrong there. Otherwise this is just a byproduct of the fact that no menus are yet configured. Create a new menu in that center column; save it; and the fields on the left should become clickable.

Let me know if I’m wrong there or if this isn’t the problem you’re facing. Cheers and thanks for your patience so far.
