Problem installing WP Multisite on local server using Xampp

    Working on a site redesign where I need to design on localhost and use WP Multisite (first time for both of these things for me).

    I have been able to download and install Xampp, add a database and install WP. The problems start when I try and try to pretty permalinks, which I understand is necessary for Multisite to work. When I do this I receive this message on the screen:

    The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

    If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
