• I tried upgrading from version 1.5.2 to the new version. I’m using php version 4.4.2, mysql version 4.0.27. I copied the new version over and had the permissions problem with every page. Foolish me, I hadn’t backed up everything. So I went ahead and pulled over a copy of the original install. I’m getting the “error establishing a database connection”. I’ve updated the wp-config.php file with the information I believe is correct. The database is hwebsh25_wp2, the user is admin_wp2, and I’ve copied the encrypted password directly from the database. Nothing seems to work. I know the database is up and working because I can use the php admin to log into it. I’m just not sure where to go from here. Should I completely wipe out that directory and try to reinstall?

If I can ever get this to work, I’ll do what I should have done in the first place and set up the upgrade in a separate test folder. Thanks for your help!

  • I’ve had the exact same problem. Only I did back everything up. When I restored everything, including the config.php file, it still gives me the error message about not being able to connect to the database. I’ve checked the database with the tools on the server, and it says the database if fine. I know the password and location of the database in the config file are fine. So what is up???

I was able to create a new mysql user and password and assign it all privileges to the database. I edited the config file to use that user instead of the old one. That fixed the connection error – but then I got a blank home page (index.php). I went to my WordPress admin panel and found that, even though my themes folders were just where they alwyas have been, WordPress could not see any installed themes – even the default one – hence the blank screen. I downloaded a new copy of Blix and uploaded it to the Themes folder and WordPress still cannot see it.

I have restored all my original ver 1.5.2 files, so I don’t know what is up but this is VERY frustrating.

Please ignore last post – I figured out that problem. I had created a new folder “wp_content” to hold my backup files, and when I restored it I didn’t realize that I had mistakenly named it “wp_content” instead of “wp-content” (underscore instead of hyphen). Once I renamed the folder, my themes returned.
