Apologies if this is a dumb question, I am new to WordPress and haven’t found the answer to this question anywhere.

I have generated an XML sitemap using this plugin and the plugin reports that Google and Bing have been successfully notified about the sitemap. When I logged in to Google webmaster tools though it said there were no sitemaps submitted. I gave it the URL to the XML sitemap and it found it okay, but then 404 errored on every URL.

I’m sure I must have done something wrong but am not sure what, can anybody give me some advice please?

    – Do I need to add the sitemap to Webmaster tools?
    – Why would Webmaster tools give 404 errors?

The site for which I am submitting the sitemap is http://www.wayfarerschorus.com. This is a replacement site and the domain has been transferred across from a previous host, so there are still pages indexed from the previous site.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Ian

  • I’ve got the exact same question. I’ve used this plugin to generate sitemaps for several sites, and it says that Google, Bing, etc have been notified. But Webmaster Tools always says that no sitemaps have been submitted.

You need to submit and “test” your sitemap via your Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; the ping from this plugin only “notifies” them of updates, it does not add them to your respective accounts for you.
