• I’m trying to update my online newspaper (www.northwestcaterer.co.uk) to WordPress 3.4 but continually get the error message:

You cannot update because WordPress 3.4 requires MySQL version 5.0 or higher. You are running version 4.1.22.

I contacted my hosting company who migrated the site to a different server running the required PHP and MySQL but it didn’t work. I’ve seen the server details and it is definitely running PHP 5.39 and MySQL 5.5.20 but still I can’t update.

Any advice or assistance with this problem would be gratefully received.

  • You have to double check again with your hosting provider whether the MySQL version fits to the requirement or not. Otherwise you can try do a manual update via FTP.

Thanks Richard – I’ll check again with the hosting company (if only so they can confirm the version doesn’t comply with the WP requirements!) and also consider a manual update, which I think is frought with dangers, especially for a non-tech person like me! (When you say via FTP am I right in thinking that means downloading the version and then re-installing over the old one?) Cheers, Julian
