Updating WooCommerce from 4.7 to 5.1 is failing and breaks the Woo installation. I’ve found a workaround but would like to ID the problem and fix it if possible.

Auto-updates are disabled. When I click update, it eventually times out with a 500 error. At that point, Woo doesn’t show up on the plugins page & it’s not active on any of the sites. Reinstalling it fails & I’m told the destination folder already exists. Renaming or deleting the folder & installing works, but I’d rather have a smooth update.

I’ve tried two different approaches: 1) Manually uploading the new version. It prompts me to confirm the newer version but then fails with no message. WooCommerce 4.7 remains installed. 2) Disable & delete WooCommerce. This fails with a message that woocommerce.php couldn’t be deleted. Reinstalling I get the “destination already exists” error.

Any ideas on what I could try to get the update to be successful?

  • Hello,

500 error is often caused by a plugin conflict. If you have access to the admin dashboard, try to deactivate all the plugins and switch theme to Storefront first, and then install WooCommerce manually via FTP. Please make a backup first just in case! If the new version is installed successfully after that, then the error is caused by your theme or plugin. You can enable them one by one to find out the culprit.

We’ve not heard back from you in a while, so I’m marking this thread as resolved. Hopefully, you were able to find a solution to your problem! If you have further questions, please feel free to open a new topic.
