I’m trying to upgrade an old WordPress installation. I’m trying to follow the instructions here:-

    http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended#Detailed_Upgrade_Instructions_for_1.5.x.2C_and_versions_2.0_-_2.6.5.2C_to_3.3.1

My database is backed up, and all the original WordPress is backed up (it’s fairly standard with no added plugins as far as I know).

I can ask for a password reset and that seems to work, but when I log in with the admin user and password all I get to see is:-

There’s no dashboard or admin or anything.

I have shell access to the hosting site so I can manually edit configuration and/or other files if necessary.

Can anyone suggest a way out of this?

For example if I just install version 3.3.1 and restore the database from the old site will things be anything like usable?

OK, my last idea seems to have actually worked! 🙂

I moved the old installation off the directory where it was installed and installed WordPress 3.3.1 there instead. I then edited the new installation’s wp-config.php file so that it uses the database from the old site. It didn’t all work immediately but the admin pages were OK, when I then went to view the site WordPress offered to update the database so I let it do that – and it all works now!

I’m impressed that it turned out to be so painless.
