Problem when page set to private

Yes, you are correct–setting the page with that shortcode to private (admin-only access) will BREAK the directory.

It sounds like what you want is a membership plugin, which can restrict access to URLs on public pages. For that, I would suggest something like Restrict Content Pro or Member Mount. Regarding changing the slug of the page–that’s definitely something you can do easily. We use the slug of the page we create for that–so for business-directory, that would be the slug of the page “Business Directory” that BDP created for you. You’re welcome to update that to whatever you like, within the WP naming rules for slugs.
