Hi Clivesmith,
Thanks for reaching out.
There are two options which can influence your web vitals. Speaking of CLS, I suggest using placements and their inline CSS feature to determine a fixed height for your ads. You can read more about this right here in the manual.
You’ll also find a guide on “How to integrate Google AdSense without relevant negative Impact on Page Speed and Core Web Vitals“.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
Best regards,
Henning
Hi Henning,
Thank you for replying so quickly, I will check out your suggestions

I think the problem comes from the advert that appears after the menu and before the header picture. I cannot see how to stop that one from appearing. The strange thing is that it is the same for desktop but only the mobile is upsetting google.
the website is wateratairports.com
Hey Clive,
The ad is coming from Google Auto Ads. These are only customizable in your AdSense account.
To improve the page speed, the only option I see is placing a manual AdSense ad at this position and disabling the Auto Ad there.

Henning
If I look in adsense under ads / by sites then if I click on edit (the pencil) for my site it shows where my ads would be placed (there is an icon to change from mobile to desktop view) The ad below the menu and above the heading picture does not show up, only the ones further down, so I am not sure why they show up on my site.
Hey Clive,
You’re looking at the right location. Please follow this manual to exclude areas of your website from showing Auto Ads.
Best regards,
Henning
Hi,
I have now excluded all areas on the front page for ads, I have disabled your ads plugin as well as others that may be slowing startup down such as gdpr and it has not changed the cls for mobile. As I said there is not a problem for the desktop. I am running the twentytwelve theme, could that be the problem, it is a responsive theme but is it too old ?
Hey Clive,
I checked back the twentytwelve theme using the Chrome browser Lighthouse feature. I was able to improve the overall scores using a caching plugin or script optimizer like Autoptimize.
Some parts of the theme are still causing CLS issues. On my end, “read more” buttons and article author fields causing the biggest shifts. You can read more about solutions for these cases in the official CLS documentation.
If possible, upgrading your theme is also a valid option, using a more modern and lightweight way to load elements on the web.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
Best regards,
Henning
Hi Henning,
Thanks, I use cloudflare which I hoped would sort out some of the caching issues, I have been looking at the astra theme, which is almost working out of the box, so I think I will investigate it some more and change to that.
Thanks again for all your help
Regards
Clive
