My website theme was supplied by a company that gives you their theme and you have to edit it. It has an About section in it. In there it has Custom Fields. I want to edit the Custom Field About Us and put in my bio. I create the custom field and add it but the value for the field does not show up (my bio info). I contacted them about editing their theme and they tell me I should consult the forum here. Can anyone help me figure this out?

    What Theme is it?

Normally the Theme developer is responsible for supporting his/her theme if there is trouble, and keep in mind that if it’s a premium/commercial (non-free) theme then it’s unlikely that you’ll get help here, but if it’s a free theme then some of us can try to help you.

That said, if the Theme developer is using a custom field for this Bio information, then their template supplied with the Theme should display it. Stock WP Themes don’t natively display custom field data (aka ‘metadata’), you have to add PHP to the template file to get that to display.

It’s also important to pay close attention to the directions in your Theme – if it says to ‘create a custom field named (whatever)’ then you have to be 100% certain that you’re naming it correctly – if it doesn’t match, then their template can’t display the content of that custom field. Code is specific and case sensitive.

It is their theme they built and yes I agree they should be supporting it….I complained to them about they should do it but it got brushed off….

I can’t find the php file to manually edit myself….any clue where that would be?

the custom field is already filled in….I click the field and a About Us can be selected then you fill in the value (my bio info)….

thanks for taking the time to try and help….

Sorry but you still didn’t say what theme it is…..we’d really need to know that to be able to help.

So the theme’s author is Erik Tailor – did you contact him directly for support? Is he the person who brushed you off?

Also, where did you obtain that specific theme? I can’t find it, he has a number of themes on ThemeForest, but not this particular one.

Lastly, my guess is that it’s a premium theme (one you bought, rather than a free theme). If that’s the case, it will be very very difficult for anyone here to help – officially this Forum does not support commercial Themes or plugins (although some people here might be willing to try), primarily because without knowing exactly how the theme is put together, we’d just be taking stabs at it in the dark.

For example, the code to display the Bio might be in a widget, or it might be in the theme’s functions.php, or it might be in the template file that constructs the home page (often index.php or home.php or frontpage.php). Or it might be in the Theme’s settings and/or options.

There are too many variables to guess at it.

Let’s start with this. Post *where* you obtained the Theme, and if it’s a paid-for theme or a free one. If you posted in their support forum for help, post a link to that post as well.

The reason I ask for that is that if you’ve paid for a Theme, and the theme developer has refused to help, then he should be reported to the website he’s selling through. Although I didn’t find this theme on ThemeForest, if I had then I’m sure ThemeForest would want to know that a member is not helping his customers.

If you’ve purchased it through a site that is not authorized to be selling it, perhaps Erik doesn’t know about that. You may be better off to get in touch with him directly for support.

If it were me, I’d be tempted to ask for a refund and just find another theme, but that may or may not be possible for you.

Thanks for writing….It is a product I bought from someone and they supplied the theme so I would guess that company paid Erik to build it for them. It is the company I bought it from that is telling me to consult WP…which is BS and I have already expressed my anger of this…..next stop is the person I bought this from…..there are numerous problems with their theme and I’m very upset….sorry to have bothered everyone….you can close this thread….once again thanks for trying….

Well I sympathize with your frustration and do sincerely wish you the best of luck with this.

Only you can mark this resolved – there is a dropdown in the right sidebar that only the original poster (or a forum moderator) can access.

I think I found the problem. I have to use WP Importer plugin and I noticed that the plugin is not supported with the version WP I have currently which is 4.5.2 and the plugin is for 4.3.4 because I have getting errors when trying to import the xml file required for their theme….

Anyone know an alternative to WP Importer or how I can get the xml file imported into my WP site?
