I am experiencing an issue with the External files in Media Library plugin. I have installed it on WordPress and correctly entered the connection details for a specific FTP server in the ‘Choose file from an FTP server’ option.

The plugin successfully connected to the specified directory on the server. However, the files are being copied into the Media Library instead of being linked externally. I am not receiving an external link; the file is simply copied to the /wp-content/uploads/...... directory.

I would like to know how to configure the plugin so that it only links to the external file, without copying it to my WordPress installation’s uploads folder.”

    Hello,

    Thank you for your question.

What you are experiencing is the normal procedure for an FTP connection. A file available via FTP is accessible to you (via FTP), but not to visitors to your website. It must therefore be stored locally in your websites space so that it can be delivered on your website.

The plugin allows you to bypass this with the proxy, but there are limitations due to the associated delivery times. FTP is a very slow protocol and would cause disruptions here. Under Settings > External Files > Proxy > Images, you will also find the following note:

Files from other protocols (such as FTP) are generally only saved locally without a proxy.

Based on your question, I would consider further development to see if this could be made possible in some way. However, the plugin’s FTP connection can simplify the integration of external files into your own project. The next major update to the plugin, which I am currently testing, will include many new options for this.
