I’m using UAM (https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/user-access-manager/) to restrict access to articels, pages…. depending on specific role.
This alos gives me the possibility, that one not having access also cannot search and find data for with he is not allowed.

Funny enough, i can select all movies, set them to lets say Group Family User, but when logging off and on again as admin, all movies are again having Full Access.

    Are there any incompatibilities known?

If so, how to restrict access (and search and find) to specific users?

    Thanks

  • The plugin is very limited when it comes to roles and capabilities, its usage is basically reserved to admins. Adding a better user roles and capabilities support is a planned featured, though, even if no date is set yet.

As mentioned: i’m using UAM (from here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/user-access-manager/) with which i can set the access on every single post or page or … to a defined usergroup (not connected to a role!).

After adding some more movies yesterday i found the funny fact, that all movies to an old collection just forget the restriction whereas the movies i added yesterday to another collection kept the restriction i set.

    It’s really weird…..

I think i found the bug.

It is not yours but the plugin User-Access-Maanager.
In the past i used it only and everytime on single articles and pages and everything worked fine.

Just since i imported my several hundred movies i also tried to change the permission in a mass update.

The UAM implements a new area “Access Control” where you can choose the desired access group.
Additionally when in mass-update-mode you can choose between add – remove – overwrite access groups.
And here is the bug. I’ve choosen overwrite all the time (to be on the secure side) but this did not work well. Adding is working…

I already informed the author of UAM.

However, as UAM is nevertheless a cute little tool, maybe you want to ahve a closer look as well in the combination of UAM and your plugin.

Some further corss checks and ….. ouch

After a while all (!) my movies lost again their access restrictions. It must be an incompatibility between UAM and your plugin.

I assume your pligin is creating every movie as a single article (although i can’t see them in the main article list.
If they are not like normal articles but created dynamically during runtime then this would be the explanation. How should an object store something if the object in fact does not exists?

Not really: the plugin is using a custom WordPress post type, ‘movie’; that’s why they don’t appear in the articles list (nor in the pages list). But they are stored just like regular Posts and Pages, that’s the very same thing apart from the name and a few dedicated features.

I’ll take a look at UAM to see if I can find the cause of this issue.

You can wait with deeper investigation.

I found another very promissing looking plugin for setting restrictions. If this does it in a correct way we found not only the “guilty” one but saved worked on top.

I will give you feedback as soon i’m through with my tests.

    Second:
It is a good thing, that movies are of a custom post type because then they are “hidden” in the standard lists in the admin area.

    But a small cosmetic thing:
When creating a new “normal” post you can refer to another post via an embedded link. Here you can choose from a list of all your pages, posts….uh….and thousands of movies 😉
Idea: hook into this dialog with a checkbox: Show Movies

    Just my 5 cents

… Quite a good idea, actually. I’ll see if and how that’s possible.

The custom post type is precisely meant to avoid mixing up pages/posts with movies (that’s a library plugin, after all, basically the point is to have your movies in a dedicated part), but there are still places where there’s a confusion, like you mentioned, posters and embedded links. That’s things I’ll try to fix.

    Thanks for your dedication 🙂

OK, as far as i can see, my new plugin for access restriction does what it should and what i wanted.
I think the old plugin has problems with custom post types.

The only pity was, that i had to set all restrictions newly on my whole site as i installed the new plugin, managed all restrictions and deinstalled the old plugin.

So, good news, this ticket will be closed now by myself.
