Translation of grouped product becoming to simple product (e.g. to default). I’m translating via duplication. I have also found some treads about the same problem for variable products, but without solution.

The product type is actually a taxonomy and WPML will only sync taxonomies to translations when first creating the translation.

If you remove the duplicate and duplicate the original product again does it work?
