Product Image Renaming Issue

    We have a new issue. If we import lines from a CSV-file to update some product details, WooCommerce automatically creates a new image in the upload folder and adds -1 to the file name. The original image is still there. Then these -1 files result in 403 Error (Forbidden) sometimes but not always. I tried to import one line only from CSV and it still added the -1. The only way to fix this is to go to each product in WooCommerce, select the original image file without -1 and delete the -1 duplicate. Then the issue goes away. However, we have 600 products to go through manually… Thank you!

    Hey there, @timpsa! Thanks for contacting us. I’m happy to help you.

    When you upload a new image with the same filename as the old one, WordPress will not overwrite it, instead, it will append a number to the end of the filename in order to make it unique. This is the expected behavior.

    But I understand you are having issues with it.

    For us to take a better look, please provide the following information:

    • Send a URL of one of your product images.
    • Send us a link to the CSV you are working with (it could be only 1 product, it could be a sample).

    Furthermore, I’d like to understand your site properly. Please share with us the necessary information below for us to investigate the issue further:

    System Status Report which you can find via WooCommerce > Status > Get system report > Copy for support.
    Fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs. Then you can use the selector to search for Fatal Errors.

    Thank you! First of all we are not uploading new images but using the existing ones. Here’s a sample of the CSV for one product. As you can see, the product image path doesn’t have -1 noted but the system adds it automatically when importing the CSV.

    Now that I uploaded the CSV, it didn’t maintain the image file name but automatically change it to -1 file that doesn’t work properly.

    The only way (I know of) is to go to the product page in WooCommerce, change the image to the correct one and delete the -1 one that was created. The back end doesn’t even show the thumbnail of the -1 file (it shows broken).

    First, before we can get to the error logs, let’s try solving the issue with the images. As a next step, go to WooCommerce > Status > Tools and try the following:

    • Clear WooCommerce transients
    • Clear Expired transients
    • Regenerate Product lookup tables
    • Update database

    Once that is done try uploading the CSV again and let us know if the issue persists.

    Thank you! I tried those steps but it didn’t help. However we discovered that the issue was with a plugin called Converter for Media. It probably created the duplicates. I manually ran the refresh with the plugin and it fixed it all. Now just have to remove the duplicates and reassign the originals. Thank you for your help!
