program to customize?

    i was just wondering if there is some kind of editor or program i have to use to customize the files from a theme i downloaded. i am new with php but usually just simply use notepad to write my html. i tried to open index.php in notepad and it wont work. help!

    It should. Notepad is one of the recommended plain text editors for editing the theme files. Of course, any (non-wysiwyg) html editor is fine.
