My mistake – there’s nothing wrong:) The flag is tiny on my website, and with my tired old eyes, I couldn’t make out the 4 even tinier white fleurs-de-lis. Looking close, I’m now able to see them.

I understand. We rovide these flags for convenince. It’s possible however to use custom flags by uploading them to a directory wp-content/polylang. See also: https://polylang.pro/doc/can-i-use-my-own-flags-for-the-language-switcher/
