Question about self hosting

I am considering starting a self hosted blog with wordpress but I’m trying to decide if this would be right for me or not. I don’t want to spend a lot of money (because I don’t have much to spend). So other than the self hosting monthly fee and buying a domain name is there any other charges or fees that I would need to consider if I go with the self hosting route?

I was also wandering if self hosted blogs are easy to maintain? I don’t have much knowledge in this area and I don’t want to get into something that would be hard to understand or maintain.
