I would like to put a link in a text block to an external document but the only way seems to require me to know at least a part of the document name (URL). Is there a way to have the insert link (Ctrl K) button bring up a list of documents in the media library so that I can select the right one visually from the information shown in the list?

Hi there, you can paste in any URL you like into the link field, you aren’t restricted to your existing pages and posts. So I’d suggest you copy out your document link from your Media Library and then paste it in the link box.

In the Media Library, there’s an option to copy the file’s URL by clicking a button. Here’s a screenshot:

Edit Media Self hosted Test WordPress

Then paste the URL into the link box, as explained here:

If you already have the URL of the website you want to link to in the clipboard, highlight the text, you want to make into a link and use CTRL + V to add the hyperlink to the text.

That said, if you have given your media items descriptive filenames (i.e. my-lovely-dog-tessa.jpg, the link search box should find it if you put a word in the filename in the search box; I just tested this on my end. You can separate words with dashes in your filenames to make them more searchable.

Let me know how it goes!

    And just to be clear:

No, I don’t think so. The search box does require you to input some text.
