Questions about the Events Search function in basic plugin

I have an older client who I installed the Events Calendar basic plugin for about 6 months ago and it was working very well for her. She doesn’t have any recent events but was trying to search past events and it brings back no results. Before I check to see if the search function is not working, I wanted to ask a simple question. What does the search function pull from the event information in order to work. It’s possible she didn’t do that part correctly. Is it tags? Keywords? Categories? Also, most important question, will it return results if all the events are in the past?
