• I am running 2.8.4 and since 2.9 is now available.

Can I jump directly to 2.9 from 2.8.4 and update it from admin panel or do I have to manually upgrade to 2.8.5, then 2.8.6 and then I can upgrade to 2.9?

I just didn’t have the time to upgrade to 2.8.5 and 2.9 just came out, so what’s better to do to keep my blog running?

    Thanks

  • Yes, but:
    1. Make an sql backup
    2. Make an xml export in WordPress
    3. Make sure your theme and wp-config.php etc are backed up.
    4. If you are using plugins, and want/need to keep using them, first go here: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/extend/plugins/ and verify if these plugins are already compatible with 2.9 DO THIS BEFORE UPDATING WordPress. Note: in the automatic update process there is an option to also update all your all your plugins, but what if the plugin author has not yet adapted the plugin for 2.9; then you are stuck.
    5. If your site is important to you, and you are not expierienced, test the upgrade first on a testsite that is identical to your own. You have to setup that testsite first.
    And read this: http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Upgrading_WordPress

3a. Disable all plugins and revert to the default theme.

    6. Check out site usability before changing theme.

    7. Turn plugins on a couple at a time and make sure they work and nothing breaks before turning on the next couple.

    Is there any other way?

Yes, if your site’s availability and content is unimportant, just hit the upgrade now button in the WP Dashboard.
