Can not get this to stop. It’s been doing it for over a year. I have around 300 products. 90% of them are Variable type products. Randomly, all of a sudden I’ll log in and notice that say, 70 of the products are set to Simple. I didn’t touch them, or anything else for that matter. From one day to the next. The Variable data is still there, I can simply open each single product and go back to Variable and hit Update, and it’s good. But I can’t do this in bulk, and it takes me literally more than an hour or two to do this one at a time.

I haven’t added or changed any plugins. It’s done it 3 times now, in 3 weeks. and I’m at wits end.

Is there any type of log file that will show what’s happening? How on earth can I get this to stop?

    Hey there,

    That sounds very weird!

As a workaround, you could export the products to a CSV, make the change, and then reupload the products. That will save you time rather than needing to manually update the prodoucts. Here’s how to get started: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/product-csv-importer-exporter/

That’s not exactly an ideal situation, though – the product types shouldn’t be changing on their own. I haven’t heard of this happening before, which leads me to think it’s a conflict with another plugin or possibly (though unlikely) your site’s theme. The best way to find out is to set up a staging site and make sure that the product types are still randomly switching. Once you’re sure they are, then try a conflict test to see if that stops the problem – if it does, you know it’s something on your site.

Here’s how to do that conflict test:

    • Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
    • Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    • Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

As I mentioned, this is good time for a staging site as you can’t do this kind of testing on your live site without affecting your customers. If your host doesn’t offer that option, we recommend WP Staging for quickly spinning up a new test site.
