Hey. I can see what you mean, but I can’t recreate it. Have a look at https://speakout.123host.net.au/speakout-demo/ and you can see it is working. Also have had no other reports of this.
My suggestion would be to see if it is another plugin clashing by temporarily disabling all other plugins. If that solves it, enable them one at a time to see which is the cause.
If it is another plugin and you can nail which it is, then I am happy to tweak SpeakOut! to play nicely.

Looks like the NextGen Photo Gallery plugin was the problem — but now I can’t close the petition after it opens!

Clicking the (X) at the top right of the Petition Box doesn’t work — but clicking outside the box closes it — so I added a message to tell users to click outside the box!
I hope you will be able to tweak SpeakOut! to work with nextGen as now all my photo galleries are broken!
Thanks for that. I will investigate. Likely there are element names that clash.
I know about the X not working. I thought I have fixed that a few versions ago but found a problem with it this morning. It will be sorted in the next release.
I have added nextgen gallery plugin and added a gallery to my petition page but I can’t recreate the problem.
Can you give me more details about your nextgen gallery settings?

I have re-enabled the NextGen plugin and the problem has not returned. If it comes back, I will try to be very selective in disabling plugins to provide you with better information. Thank you for being so responsive.
