Before posting this I waddled through about 200 posts on the subject, read about 20% of the 200 and now that I am thoroughly confused, time for a post.

I’ve set up Google reCaptcha. I have added all the API keys and secret information into their appropriate places in integrations on the contact form.

The first issue I had was the contact form related issue of contact forms not being able to send their data. This was an easy one. From previous runarounds the solution to that was to make sure I am not logged in as administrator on the WordPress site in question. Though this issue irritates me slightly, it’s no problem to log out.

So I go to my sites contact form thinking I’ll see an added reCaptcha logo or something, but I don’t. Not a problem. Many of those 20% percent of posts I read repeatedly said reCaptcha works automatically, I don’t have to do anything, but more importantly, I’m not going to see anything, new.

So with all that said, I’m going to assume till tomorrow (when I check to see if there’s any more spam coming from Mr. Henrydomo (which is a list server someone is abusing) to see if it’s effective. If there’s no spam, then this post didn’t even need to be written cause it just works.

If I do see that spam, then it means everything that I read was correct and incorrect, and I’ll start all over with the troubleshooting.

God I hope this works. I removed JetPack from all of my sites because all I cared for it to do was help with spam, and when it couldn’t do that, I didn’t need it anymore. Sure I miss the functionality, but it sure is nice having one less plugin to deal with.

Okay, this is the next day after installing the Google reCaptcha service on one of my servers. I expected to see the same 4-8 pieces of spam mail I was receiving daily but I was pleasantly surprised. Either Mr. Henrydomo and his spam minions have given everyone a break from spam Christmas day (fat chance) or adding Google reCaptcha to my sites contact form has helped.

Outwardly nothing has changed. There’s nothing different visually and from that standpoint I’m indifferent. It might have been nice to see the little reCaptcha interaction. From a functional standpoint however, there’s no spam in that contact form instance and that was the goal I was trying to accomplish. Might even bring JetPack back if this becomes a streak.

I was getting the spam through the contact form on one of the sites I’m helping to build and hopefully this is the solution.

I’ll touch back on this thread in a few days to a week and update.
