Recent Posts – Thumbnail Image Disappeared

    I just updated WordPress to the latest version and updated a lot of plugins.
    The “recent posts” widget no longer displays a thumbnail image (the feature image for each post) I don’t know why this happened and cannot find where to fix it. The widget options do not show an option for a thumbnail.
    I didn’t create the site, so I don’t know how it was set to begin with.
    Any ideas?

    FYI, I had no plugin for this, just the included recent posts widget. If I do use a plugin, then my custom CSS doesn’t apply anymore.
    Am I right to think that the programmer had edited the php so it would show the feature image as a thumbnail, but with the update, it was overwritten?
    If so, where can I find the previous file so I can copy it back?
    I backup everyday & have the files, but have no idea what exact file this would be in.
    Help is appreciated!!!
