A developer sent us a link to download the wpress file for a site design.
It is about 750MB, and so it couldn’t go via PHP/Web/etc. Easy enough, right? Upload the file to the site via FTP, it shows up in the restore option, boom, we think we’ve worked around the issue. Nope. Restore functionality is pay.

    Backup is free.
    Restore is paid.
Okay, we’ll just point it to the URL.
Nope, that redirects to a $99 plugin.

Do you see a problem here?

These are inappropriate business practices, and are detrimental to WordPress as a product and to the community.

If your product is for sale, you need to clearly state that. You can reword it how you want, but there is no amount of rewording that will make what you’re doing anything less than shady business practices.

We now have to spend extra time working with the developer to get a real backup plugin installed. We’ll most likely use one we’ve paid for.

Again, if you stated at the outset that this was a paid product, none of this would have been an issue.

    Very disappointing.

You can import the file by drag-dropping it on import page or you can click import from and choose file.

Support is paid, but it’s a one-off payment and you can use it again and again. The plugin takes some flak for this reason, but personally I think it’s one of the best. The developers should go to more effort to make this clearer though I agree.

consulthawkins totally agree with you. I lost an entire day trying to restore a backup and it didn’t work. I try in a accepted hosting company bluehost…and the upload stuck at 0.03%, tried in another hosting company Inmotion, stuck at 40%, then in 43% then in 36%. Change .ini files, wp-config files, .htaccess and nothing!!! So what I think? If you want it to work pay. At least I learn at the hard way. Never again!
